The idea of the AUN-China cooperation was initiated
during the discussion between the Chairman of the AUN and H.E.
Madame Chen Zhili, the Minister of Education of the People's of
Republic of China (PRC) in October 1999 and April 2000 in Bangkok
. After the Meeting, the “ASEAN-China Academic Co-operation
and Exchange Programme” outlining possible collaborative
activities between the PRC and ASEAN in the fields of human resources
development and higher education, was proposed.
Aim:
To promote the collaboration on human resource
development between ASEAN and China through academic activities.
Activities:
For the initial step, The Rector/Presidents from
the ASEAN Member Universities and designated Chinese Universities
met each other at The First ASEAN-China
Rectors Conference in June 2002. The Meeting group discussed
the possibilities to collaborate for mutual interest. They explored
and studied out the framework and work plan for the future ASEAN-China
Academic Collaboration.
The University of Beijing Foreign Studies
hosted the Roundtable Meeting
on Chinese and ASEAN Studies between
ASEAN and Chinese Universities , which was held during 18-20 May
2004 in Beijing . There were 72 participants from the AUN Member
Universities and Chinese Universities . During the meeting, the
result of survey on the status of ASEAN and Chinese studies in
the two regions was presented. The participants also discussed
about the current problems and obstacles of ASEAN-China academic
cooperation.
Current Status:
Followed from the comment from the First ASEAN-China
Rectors’ Conference in 2002
in Bangkok and Round Table Meeting in May 2004 in Beijing,“The
Second ASEAN-China Rectors’ Conference.” is agreed to be held
in Hanoi, Viet Nam on 14-16 March 2007. The Conference will review
the results of the First Rectors Conference, exchange the update
