ASEAN - Japan
The AUN Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development
Network (AUN/SEED-Net) was e stablished as an autonomous sub-network
of the AUN. The AUN/SEED-Net is composed of 19 leading Member
Institutions from 10 ASEAN Countries and 11 Japanese Supporting
Universities . The Network is mainly supported by the Japanese
Government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency
(JICA) for the initial period of 5 years (2003 -2008) and was
partially supported by the ASEAN Foundation.
Aims:
- To promote human resources development
in engineering in ASEAN countries;
- To activate internationally competitive personnel in leading
engineering educational institutions in the ASEAN region for advancing
academic cooperation on an equal footing and for providing educational
and technical assistance to less advanced engineering institutions;
- To promote collaboration and solidarity between academics and
professionals in the region through the cross-border and region-wise
development of engineering education and research capabilities.
Activities:
The main activities of the AUN /SEED-Net are Graduate
Programme Supports and Collaborative Research Supports. As of
July 2005, the Network has awarded 205 scholarships for Master's
Degree Programme , 30 scholarships for Ph.D. Sandwich Programme
, and 25 scholarships for Ph.D. Programme in Japan . In addition
, the Network has granted support for 60 Collaborative Research
Projects in which 68 master's students and 18 doctoral students
in the sandwich program are involved.
AUN /SEED-Net also grants other research supporting
activities namely Thesis Research Support , Special Equipment
Support , Japanese Professors Dispatch Programme , Short-term
Study Programme in Japan , Short-term Visit Programme to Japan
and to Member Countries. Other activities of the Network include
Steering Committee Meetings in which the steering committee members
meet twice a year , Field-wise Seminars in which experts in respective
engineering fields discuss and systemize collaborative research
activities , Promotional Trips to recruit outstanding students
from member countries to Graduate Programmes, and Monitoring Schemes
to assure the high quality outcome of the Network.
In addition , the Network arranged the Workshop
on Disaster Mitigation and Management in ASEAN Countries in Phuket
, Thailand on 3-4 August 2005, as a sustainable countermeasure
of disaster. The Workshop has established the regional collaboration
in research and human resource development on disaster management.
Forty-eight AUN/SEED-Net graduates have already
returned to contribute to their Sending Institutions and/or countries.
Eight of them pursue the Ph.D. level under AUN /SEED-Net Ph.D.
Sandwich Programme and Ph.D. Programme in Japan .
AUN /SEED-Net has received positive responses
from ASEAN countries for human resource development in the engineering
fields. Students and staff of Member Institutions with different
backgrounds have a chance to discuss their academic points of
view , share knowledge and research experiences , and know each
other from the heart. Through these AUN /SEED-Net activities ,
the fruitful and sustainable seeds are growing rapidly in ASEAN
countries and Japan in both academic and human networks.
Although the Project is supported by JICA for
the initial period of 5 years (2003 -2008), all of the Network
members are working hard to sustain the Project after the period.
Recognizing that the sustainability of the network is vital to
the sustainability of international graduate programmes at Host
Institutions, c onsiderable efforts have been made towards the
Project's sustainability.
