EC-ASEAN Intellectual Property Rights Co-operation Programme (ECAPII)

ECAPII is the European Commission supported programme specifically aiming at promoting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in the ASEAN countries.
Relationships between the ECAPII and the AUN have been developed since 2006 when the ECAPII approached and stated its intention in granting scholarships to representatives from AUN Member Universities to attend the “Regional Training Course on Intellectual Property Management” at Asian Institute of Technology on 28 September-7 October 2006. Five scholars from the Royal University of Phnom Penh (Cambodia), National University of Laos (Lao PDR), Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia), and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) were awarded with full scholarships. Information with regard to intellectual property rights (IPR), international legal IP framework and IP management were main focuses of the training course.

ECAPII/AUN Regional Conference on IP Education and Networking

With a kind support from the ECAPII and through a good coordination with Chulalongkorn University, the ASEAN University Network organised the ECAPII/AUN Regional Conference on IP Education and Networking on 28-30 May 2007 at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. The event gathered representatives of AUN Member Universities to discuss the possibility of promoting an IP education in the ASEAN region. Since the topic of intellectual property was somewhat new to ASEAN, it was agreed that a collaborative relationship between universities in the region should be formed.

The ASEAN University Network Intellectual Property Network or AUNIP was, as such, established through the signing of the Memorandum on Understanding on 30 May 2007. The AUNIP is a sub-network of the ASEAN University Network with its own secretariat being set up at Chulalongkorn University. This IP network has the main responsibilities and duties of assisting universities in the ASEAN region in developing IP curricula and teaching materials; developing cooperation with other IP networks; and organising innovative and high quality conferences/seminars. With 20 founding member universities, the AUNIP may, in the future, enlarge to include more institutions in the region.
